In May 2007, Time Magazine featured a photo of an office-bound Vice President Al Gore, and it landed on a ton of different websites. The productivity folks at Lifehacker, the Engadget set, the Apple faithful, and interior designers basked in the glow of the Vice President’s monitors while close to 2000 Diggers dug away. Who am I to not get caught up in the wonder that is Al’s office?

For the past 7 years I’ve advised a group of clients on technology helping them choose the right gear and set it up, organize their offices and systems, and put together websites that they could update, maintain, and use to promote their work. So when a photo like this comes along, it’s not just a fun, “make your own caption” opportunity, it’s a case study. Even typing this post, I glaze over at the mountains of paper and the three 30″ displays.
The great thing: I wasn’t alone. All those sites have a different focus, but they all featured this shot on their homepage. Could other people possibly be interested in other’s offices, computer gear, filing systems, furniture, pens, notepads, or email strategy? Maybe!
I couldn’t shake the idea of building my own website that would feature where and how people work, and maybe share some things that have made life better for me and my clients. My wife, friends, and dogs made it clear they were tired of hearing “that would be great on OfficeSpacey.” I gave myself a deadline to launch the site or never bring it up again. This is it.
I’m not a guru of technology, office design, or productivity, but I am crazy about finding out what works for others and maybe helping them apply what has worked for me (or has worked for others). Along the way, I’ve found some solutions for common problems that you may or may not know about. Plus, I hope to pick up some useful tips from you. I think this stuff will be particularly interesting to remote or home office workers that don’t get to snag ideas from their fellow office workers.
This is just the start of things. There’s a list of ideas on my desk that will one day make their way on to the site if I don’t go broke first. So, please add OfficeSpacey to your favorite reader. I hope you pick up some good stuff along the way, or, drop something off for everyone to use.
