Office SnapShot: OfficeSpacey

Posted by Paul Mayson on February 3, 2008

Seems appropriate that the first featured OfficeSpacey “SnapShot” is my own set up (click it for larger image). Last year we moved out of a tiny Manhattan apartment that had two 10′ x 10′ rooms. One for sleeping, and the other for everything else. In the new living quarters, we have mucho space-o. So much space that I have options. In the last 12 months I have been set up on the first floor (too noisy), then the basement (unfinished and too depressing), and now an empty upstairs bedroom (just right?). I like this the best so far. It’s not as quiet as I’d like, but so far it’s the best option. Here’s the cockpit…

Most of my gear is aging but sufficient. Even the desk is a piece of a REALLY nice desk from Ethan Allen. It’s the small, extension of an enormous, executive desk. Since it’s made to attach as a “wing,” I had to make the legs with some spare 2 x 4’s.

The MacPro (with 3 gigs of RAM) is fantastic as is the 24″ Dell monitor. Even though some people hate the new Apple keyboards, I’m a fan. It’s my favorite keyboard to date.

Work wise, I almost always have something in my inbox(es), but they are in control. The way you see the inbox pictured above is as bad as it will get until I do a sweep. The email inbox hovers at around 5-9 messages. The best thing I did with email was to set my client (mail.app) to check every hour rather than every 17 seconds. I use OmniFocus and my paper notebook to dish off action items, reminders, and quick lists.

I work facing a window even though some advise against it due to distractions. The view isn’t fantastic, but it’s not the brick wall that I had just over a year ago. The most exciting distraction I get is the occasional squirrel that will antagonize the dogs, or a plane coming into JFK. They come in so low, it’s inevitable that one will stop and refuel in my backyard.

Gear summary:

Desired upgrades? I’d like to bump up to a Dell 30-inch monitor and use the 24″ as the secondary. The chair could go too if I could get the right deal on an Aeron chair. And by “right deal”, I mean dirt cheap.
